The eyepiece weighs 21 ounces, I think, so in addition to my 12oz finderscope/bracket, this made the front of my dob a tad topheavy. This eyepiece has made finding things extraordinarily easy. The Owl was faint, but still very much there to find. The Dumbbell Nebula (planetary) was outstanding and large enough to enjoy without boosting the power. I have been able to put the Trifid and Lagoon in the same view. Omega Centauri is so low on the horizon right now that it just looks fuzzy, but with averted vision, this eyepiece can draw out some resolved stars. That object ended up being the Saturn Nebula, a planetary nebula to the left of 72 and 73. I found M72 and M73 after this eyepiece picked up on an object that was brighter than a regular star. With this eyepiece, I was able to knock out some more Messier objects like M55 and M75, but also M72 and M73. Everything I saw in SkySafari was easily distinguishable in the field of view.įinding M13, M3, and M92 was easy, but I was also able to peg my nemesis globs, M10 and M12, without much effort at all. I saw all of them using this eyepiece and the ability to star hop made the task easy. The impressive thing was, I used this eyepiece to complete the Virgo Messier galaxies. I could easily see the Leo Trio, M81/82, M51, M101, and the Sombrero. I used it for star hopping and finding…galaxies and globular clusters. Any section of sky with lots of stars was just perfect for this eyepiece.īut wide views and large objects were not all I put this eyepiece up against. I can’t make out any dark nebulae, but I have a wider field to work with, so I can make out some of the outlines for things like the Veil. I’m waiting for the Double Cluster to rise higher in the sky so I can view it against a darker background. The views of the Beehive and the star cloud in Sagittarius have been enjoyable. ![]() Telescope Calculator produces these values:Įxit pupil: 6.34mm (may dim images for older eyes) Let me first start out by giving you some numbers. I ended up going with the low power option, the Agena 2″ 38mm Super Wide Angle (SWA) Eyepiece. A high power eyepiece would give me room to view distant objects that quickly transition across the field of view. A low power eyepiece would give me a nice 2° TFOV for star hopping and viewing large objects. ![]() When I came to the conclusion that I needed a wide field eyepiece, I looked at going in either of two directions. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The zebra spider's stalk velocity declines progressively as it nears its (stationary) prey. The probability that orientation is followed by stalking is a function of both prey size and velocity. The velocity of the prey is not involved in the determination of reactive distance, but only moving objects elicit orientation. They orient towards prey detected by their lateral eyes whenever the angle subtended by such prey exceeds 5.5°. Using their acute eyesight, they are able to accurately judge the distances they need to jump. They move slowly towards their prey until they are close enough to pounce on top of their victim, and their hunting behaviour has been described as cat-like. Like other jumping spiders, these spiders use their large front eyes to locate and stalk their prey. They have also been observed taking on prey items up to 3 times the length of the spider, such as some of the smaller species of moth. They have been observed feeding on mosquitos that are almost twice their length. Zebra spiders tend to hunt smaller spiders and other arthropods. Spiders have also been known to enter houses, where they can often be found living in the corner of windowsills. Due to their preference for open, vertical habitats they are often found living in proximity to humans in urban habitat such as on garden fences and the walls of buildings. This species is naturally associated with open habitats such as rock faces, shingle beaches and occasionally the trunks of trees. ![]() Zebra spiders are widespread across Europe, North America, and North Asia, where they are found throughout the Holarctic. These small spiders are black with white hairs that form stripes. In total there are eight eyes, with the very large anterior median eyes primarily responsible for its excellent binocular vision. Spiders in the family Salticidae have especially enlarged anterior median eyes (AME), though the anterior and posterior lateral eyes (ALE, PLE) are also large when compared to the very small posterior median eyes (PME). Male zebra spiders have distinctly larger chelicerae than females. Description įemale zebra spiders are 5–9 mm long, while males are 5–6 mm. Their common name refers to their vivid black-and-white colouration, whilst their scientific name derives from Salticus from the Latin for “dancing”, in reference to their agility, and the Greek scenicus, translating to “theatrical” or “of a decorative place,” in reference to the flashy, zebra-like coloration of the species. The zebra spider ( Salticus scenicus) is a common jumping spider of the Northern Hemisphere. ![]() ![]() ![]() Many of her closest friends have been imprisoned or fled the country, and the government blocked her news organization’s website in 2017.
